Weingut Engel · Rheinhessen, Germany
Schwarzriesling (Pinot Meunier) from pebble-stone soils. Fresh cherry, dried herbs and rose petals, with firm tannins.
Schwarzriesling is the German name for Pinot Meunier, the Pinot Noir relative most often used in Champagne cuvées. Engel grows it on pebble-stone soils — Kieselstein in German — and turns it into a barrel-aged red.
Hand-picked grapes, 30 days of maceration with stems, 24 months ageing split 50/50 between barrique and tonneau, bottled unfiltered.
Dark cherry red. The nose carries fresh cherry with dried herbs and rose petal. Fine, fruity cherry on the palate with firm tannins and a dry, taut finish.
