Weingut Engel · Rheinhessen, Germany
Riesling from the red Rotliegendes bedrock. A spiced nose of yellow fruit and orange peel, fresh acidity and clear minerality. Off-dry.
Rotliegendes is the name for the red, iron-rich Permian sedimentary rock found across parts of Rheinhessen — long before vines arrived. Engel grows Riesling on a parcel sitting on this bedrock and lets the soil register in the bottle.
Hand-picked grapes, five hours of skin contact before spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel, ten months on the lees, sealed under screw cap. Residual sugar around 13.5 g/l — off-dry in the classic Rheinhessen style.
Pale gold in the glass. The nose is full and spiced, with yellow fruit and orange peel. The palate carries the body against fresh acidity and clear minerality.
