Dry and off-dry white wine from the Mosel, East Sussex and Portugal

Dry and off-dry Riesling from the Mosel is gathered on its own page, with the words on the label explained: trocken, feinherb, Kabinett, Spätlese and Grosses Gewächs.

In short, trocken means dry, and feinherb sits just above, with a little residual sugar against the acidity.

Pinot Blanc, which the Germans call Weissburgunder, has lower acidity and more body, and is the calmer option when Riesling gets too sharp. The Chardonnay and Pinot Gris from Tidebrook in East Sussex are dry, from a cool climate with high acidity.

From Portugal come Alvarinho from Solar de Serrade in Monção e Melgaço, dry with stone fruit and citrus, and Encruzado, the Dão's own white grape, from Quinta da Fata on granite. Both are on their way in.
