Dão, Portugal
A family estate in Vilar Seco in the Dão, now in its third generation. Reds from granite lagares and white Encruzado, 10 hectares on granite.
Quinta da Fata lies in Vilar Seco near Nelas, in the Terras de Senhorim sub-region of the Dão, on a gentle south-facing slope with granite soil. The estate has been in the family for three generations. Dr. Eurico Amaral, father of the current owners, helped found the Adega Cooperativa de Nelas, the first cooperative in the region. Revista de Vinhos named Fata producer of the year in 2017.
The vineyards cover 10 hectares, with an average vine age of 25 years. The winemaker is João Cabral de Almeida.
Fata grows the Dão’s own grapes: Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro, Jaen and Tinta Roriz for the reds, and Encruzado for the white.
Clássico blends all four red grapes, trodden in lagares and aged briefly in used wood.
Reserva is made from the same grapes in granite lagares and aged six months in French and American oak.
Encruzado ferments and ages in stainless steel, with five months on its lees.
