Wines from Portugal

The Portuguese wines come from two regions: pure Alvarinho from Solar de Serrade in Monção e Melgaço (Vinho Verde), still and sparkling, and red and white from Quinta da Fata in the Dão.

Vinho Verde and the Dão: Alvarinho and granite

Vinho Verde is Portugal's northernmost wine region, and Monção e Melgaço is the sub-region where Alvarinho is the main grape. This is where Solar de Serrade stands, a manor house in Mazedo dating from the mid-17th century.

All grapes are hand-picked into 20-kilo crates. The Alvarinho ferments and rests in stainless steel on fine lees, the Reserva spends half its time in French oak, and the sparkling wine is made by the traditional method with a second fermentation in bottle.

The Dão lies further south, inland. The soil is granite, and the region has its own grapes: Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro, Jaen and Tinta Roriz for the reds, and Encruzado for the white. Quinta da Fata in Vilar Seco treads its reds in granite lagares and makes its Encruzado in stainless steel.
