Monção e Melgaço, Portugal
A 17th-century manor in Mazedo, Monção e Melgaço, in Vinho Verde. Alvarinho, still and sparkling, picked by hand.
Solar de Serrade is a mid-17th-century manor in Mazedo, in the Monção e Melgaço sub-region of Vinho Verde. In 1801 the house served as headquarters for the French forces in the area. The wine is made by SAVAM, Sociedade Agrícola de Vinho Alvarinho de Monção, managed by José Adriano Afonso.
All grapes are hand-picked into 20-kilo crates.
Alvarinho ferments and rests in stainless steel on fine lees until bottling.
Alvarinho Reserva comes from parcels selected for concentration of sugar and acidity. Half is aged in French oak, half in stainless steel, and the wine is bottled a year after harvest.
Espumante is pure Alvarinho made by the traditional method, with at least nine months on the lees before disgorgement.
